Mumbai weather: Partly cloudy skies, light rain likely in city and suburbs

Mumbai is likely to witness partly cloudy skies on Thursday, September 10, with occasional light rain possible in the city and suburbs, according to the weather forecast issued at 8 am.

The city received light rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Thursday. The average rainfall recorded was 1.65 mm in the city, 0.72 mm in the eastern suburbs and 1.95 mm in the western suburbs.

High and low tides

The first high tide is expected at 11:26 am and will reach 4.57 metres. Another high tide is forecast at 11:41 pm, with the tide expected to reach 4.32 metres.

A low tide is expected at 5:29 pm, measuring 0.86 metres. The next low tide will occur at 5:35 am on Friday, September 11, and is expected to reach 0.61 metres.

Rain forecast for Chennai, Western Ghats

Chennai and several other parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to receive rain over the next two days, even as temperatures are forecast to rise sharply in the state’s interior districts, the India Meteorological Department said.  

According to the latest weather bulletin, one or two places in districts along the Western Ghats could experience moderate rainfall on Thursday. Light to moderate rain is also likely in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Ranipet districts during the day.

The forecast offers the possibility of some relief from the prevailing heat in Chennai and its neighbouring areas. However, rainfall is expected to remain scattered, with its intensity and duration varying from one locality to another.

Rainfall activity is likely to extend to more parts of Tamil Nadu on Friday. The department forecasts moderate rain at a few places in the Western Ghats districts and in Cuddalore, Tiruchi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Madurai, Virudhunagar and Sivaganga districts. Madurai, Theni and Dindigul have been warned of the possibility of heavy rain on Friday.

Residents in these districts have been advised to remain alert to sudden spells of intense rainfall, particularly in low-lying localities and areas vulnerable to waterlogging.

Moderate rainfall has also been forecast in Tamil Nadu’s southern coastal districts on Friday. The expected showers could bring down daytime temperatures temporarily in areas receiving sustained rain.

While rain is predicted in several districts, the weather department has warned that maximum temperatures in the interior parts of Tamil Nadu could increase by up to four degrees Celsius over the next four days.
