Business leader Arundhati Bhattacharya’s memoir — Indomitable: A Working Woman’s Notes on Work, Life, and Leadership — released in a Hindi edition (Aparajita) by HarperCollins had its official book launch event at the Bombay Stock Exchange on Thursday.
The event commenced around 6.30 pm, with the welcome address after the arrival of the chief guest Mukesh Ambani, chairman and managing director of Reliance Group. Bhattacharya, having been the first woman chairman of State Bank of India, is now chief executive officer at Salesforce Inc, and also serves on Reliance’s board. The book is described as a working woman’s journey of purpose, progress and impact.
‘Instant jackpot’
Sachin Sharma, publisher at HarperCollins, said that the book has been in the making since 2020, with its English edition launched in 2022. Sharma said that while Bhattacharya was under-confident about the manuscript she had written in 2020, he knew as a publisher that it was so good that it was an “instant jackpot”. Sharma further shared that the book has done really well with working women and it has a tone which is both “humble and relatable”.
‘COVID hampered plans’
Chief guest Ambani shared how he intended to attend the unveiling of the English version as well in 2022, but “COVID had other plans”. Ambani said that the Hindi edition takes Bhattacharya’s formidable journey to the last mile, and that it is going to be more successful than the English edition. He spoke at length on Bhattacharya’s qualities and how she has positively influenced leadership by women in Reliance.
The audience at the event, including Ambani, appreciated the speech by Bhattacharya’s daughter Supriya Bhattacharya. Supriya shared how she had issues adjusting to her working mother’s schedule, which she later learnt to cope with. “Maa, the world may know you as a leader, but I am lucky enough to know you as a mother; proud of you,” Supriya said.
