The Maharashtra government has approved the installation of two ‘Kalayan’ time display machines at Mantralaya and the state legislature building to showcase traditional Indian astronomy alongside standard and GPS time, reported the PTI.
According to an order issued by the Cultural Affairs Department on Friday, the government will spend Rs 10.97 lakh to procure and install the two machines.
The devices will combine information from the traditional panchang with modern timekeeping systems.
The machines will display standard time and GPS time, as well as sunrise and sunset timings, planetary positions and movements, and the panchang, according to the PTI.
They will also provide information about important days and significant periods.
Cultural and national events to be displayed
According to the Maharashtra government order, the machines can also display information related to Indian cultural, religious, social and national events.
The initiative is aimed at presenting traditional Indian astronomical knowledge alongside modern timekeeping technology at important government buildings.
Company selected through EoI process
The order states that Aarsh Vidya Pvt Ltd expressed interest in supplying the equipment through an Expression of Interest (EoI) process, as per the PTI.
The company is reportedly the only organisation that manufactures such machines, according to the order.
Archaeology Directorate to oversee implementation
The Directorate of Archaeology and Museums will be responsible for implementing the required government procurement process.
The directorate will also carry out periodic technical inspections of the machines to ensure they remain functional.
The expenditure will be met from funds available under the Tourism and Cultural Affairs Department, the government order said, the news agency reported.
State-level competition for public Ganesh mandals
The Maharashtra Government has announced a state-level competition to honour outstanding public Ganeshotsav mandals during the 2026 festival, an official statement said on Thursday.
Sarvajanik (public) Ganeshotsav mandals from Maharashtra, other parts of India and overseas will be eligible to participate if they organise the festival through social, cultural and constructive activities.
The initiative has been expanded to the national and international level after the Maharashtra Government gave Ganeshotsav the status of a state festival, the statement said.
Mandals can apply until September 7
According to the statement, sarvajanik (public) Ganeshotsav mandals interested in taking part must submit their applications online by September 7, 2026.

Mandals have been asked to provide the required information and supporting documents in the prescribed format.
Mumbai Suburban District Collector Saurabh Katiyar has appealed to eligible mandals to participate in the competition.
Ganeshotsav 2026 will begin on September 14.
