Yellow alert in Mumbai and Thane as IMD predicts moderate rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain across Mumbai and its suburbs on Saturday, with occasional gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph.

The weather agency has also issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and Thane, warning of heavy rainfall at isolated places during the day. The maximum temperature is expected to remain around 29 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely to be 26 degrees Celsius.

With rain activity continuing across the city, authorities have advised residents, particularly those living in low-lying areas, to remain cautious during periods of heavy showers and strong winds.

According to the latest tidal forecast, high tide is expected at 1.42 pm, reaching 4.38 metres, while the next high tide will occur at 1.52 am on August 2, measuring 3.96 metres.

Low tide is expected at 7.51 pm at 1.27 metres, followed by the next low tide at 7.24 am on August 2 at 0.99 metres.

Mumbai also recorded moderate rainfall over the past 24 hours. Between 8 am on July 31 and 8 am on August 1, the city received 32.08 mm of rainfall, while the eastern suburbs recorded 11.34 mm and the western suburbs received 7.16 mm, according to IMD data.

Water reserves at 88.41per cent; Upper Vaitarna receives 160 mm rain

Meanwhile, Mumbai's seven lakes, which supply drinking water to the city, collectively held 12,79,566 million litres of water, or 88.41 per cent of their total live storage capacity, as of 6 am on Saturday, August 1, according to the Hydraulic Engineer's Department at the Bhandup Master Control Centre.

The current stock is slightly lower than the same period last year, when the reservoirs contained 12,83,810 million litres (88.70 per cent). However, it is significantly higher than 2024, when the lakes had 11,34,737 million litres, accounting for 78.40 per cent of the total live storage.

Modak Sagar, Vihar remain full

Among the seven reservoirs, Modak Sagar and Vihar continued to remain at 100 per cent live storage, while Tulsi stood at 99.66 per cent and Tansa at 98.77 per cent.

Middle Vaitarna was at 92.37 per cent, Bhatsa, the city's largest reservoir, was at 87 per cent, while Upper Vaitarna remained the lowest-filled lake at 74.45 per cent.
