It promises to be a sizzling Sunday at the quiet St Andrews Road tomorrow, August 9, and the sizzle has nothing to do with the mercury. Bandra Gymkhana members are set to congregate for an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) at the East Indian Hall from 10 am, which has on its agenda to "consider and if thought fit, to pass — with or without modification — the following resolution: "Resolved that Dr Cheryl Misquitta be and is hereby removed from the office of President of the Bandra Gymkhana with immediate effect, and that she shall cease to hold the said office and all rights, privileges, and authority attached thereto with immediate effect; AND FURTHER RESOLVED THAT (the notice has this in capital) the Managing Committee be and is hereby authorised to take all steps necessary to give effect to this resolution, including the filling of the resultant vacancy in accordance with the Rules of the Gymkhana." The resolution has to be put to a vote, which the notice says will be done by SECRET BALLOT. The results are expected on the same day.
A potboiler
While members did not give their names, a supporter of the present committee claimed that Dr Misquitta liked to “cling to power” and, “there was a lot of mismanagement at the club.” Yet, Dr Misquitta’s supporter said, “Those opposed to her must know that the earlier committee increased the club corpus from '42 crore to '100 crore in six years. People were so happy with the number of events, etc.” On the accusation that the previous committee was taking in non-Christian members and there is a fear that the flavour of a primarily East Indian club would be diluted, the Bandra Gym member said, “We have a fixed ratio for membership for Christians and non-Christians, and that was being adhered to.”
The history
. An EGM was held on March 22, 2026 to discuss the conduct of Dr Cheryl Misquitta in the elections held in September 2025. Dr Misquitta did not attend the EGM. Some members who were unhappy with Dr Misquitta’s conduct in the earlier election called for a vote of no confidence against her.
. Said resolution seeking a No-Confidence Motion against Dr Cheryl Misquitta was passed against her in the said EGM with 352 members in favour and none against. Dr Misquitta was subsequently removed from her post of the president of the Bandra Gymkhana.
. However, the agenda of the EGM, as circulated earlier, did not specify that a resolution would be passed seeking the removal of Dr Cheryl Misquitta.
. The City Civil Court at Dindoshi, prima facie upheld the passing of the said No-Confidence Motion; the same was challenged by Dr Misquitta before the high court. HC held that since there was no clear agenda that indicated Dr Misquitta would be removed as the President of the Gymkhana in the EGM, the resolution should be set aside, and a fresh EGM called for. This is being called in accordance with court orders.
