Two persons were killed and another was injured when a chemical tanker overturned and crushed a moving autorickshaw on the busy Ghodbunder Road in Thane on Wednesday, police said.
According to PTI, the incident took place at 12:30 pm on Wednesday in the Anand Nagar area when both vehicles were heading in the same direction.
Police confirmed that there was no chemical leakage from the overturned tanker following the impact.
The deceased have been identified as the autorickshaw driver, Dashrath Pawar, and a passenger, Mohammad Amin. Another passenger inside the rickshaw sustained severe injuries and was immediately rushed to a local hospital for treatment, a police official said.
Senior police inspector Rahul Mhaske, while briefing about the incident, said, "Immediately upon receiving the alert, a team of traffic police personnel along with rescue teams rushed to the spot. We managed to lift the overturned chemical tanker and pull it aside to clear the passage. The auto-rickshaw was found totally crushed beneath the weight of the heavy vehicle, as per PTI.
He also said that the traffic on this busy road was affected for some time due to the clearance operation, he said. Police are registering a case against the tanker driver.
Woman seriously injured after tree falls on car in Thane
In a separate incident, a 25-year-old woman suffered serious injuries after a tree fell amid rains near Yashodhan Nagar Hospital in Maharashtra's Thane West on Tuesday evening.
The incident was reported to the Thane Municipal Corporation's (TMC) Regional Disaster Management Cell at around 6.30 pm on July 7, 2026.
The fallen tree also damaged a parked car, while civic and emergency teams immediately reached the spot to carry out rescue operations.
Tree collapses on road
According to officials, the tree fell on a parked car. At the same time, a woman walking along the road, identified as Drishti Kadam, 25, was also trapped under the fallen tree.
Officials said that she suffered serious injuries, particularly to her back.
She was given immediate assistance and later shifted to Jupiter Hospital in Thane for further medical treatment.
Emergency teams conduct rescue operation
Several teams reached the incident site following the alert.
Those present included disaster management officials, Thane Fire Brigade personnel with a rescue vehicle, Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) personnel, emergency medical staff with an ambulance, tree authority department officials, and locals. The fallen tree was cut into pieces and removed from the road.
