Water gushes from a damaged 18-inch pipeline on Link Road in Andheri West between 11.45 am and noon on Thursday.
The leakage triggered concerns over water wastage as Mumbai continues to face pressure on its water supply due to the delayed monsoon. Locals alerted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which said repair work had been initiated.
Resident Girish Karamchandani said, “Regular inspection and maintenance of water pipelines should be a priority for the BMC to prevent leakages; every drop of water is valuable.”
“According to information received from the Water Engineering Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), repair work on the burst 450 mm diameter municipal water pipeline at the Link Road and Sub TV Lane junction is currently underway on a war footing. If the repair work is completed before 10 pm tonight, water supply to the affected areas will be restored today itself. Citizens will be informed separately whether water supply will be resumed today and, if so, at what time, depending on the progress and completion of the repair work. Residents are requested to use the available water carefully until regular water supply is fully restored,” said local Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sudhakar Ramesh Ahire.
The repair work is currently underway.
