Orange Gate-Marine Drive project: Alternate site explored for technical building

Orange Gate-Marine Drive project: Alternate site explored for technical building

A high-power committee on Tuesday conducted a site inspection near Chowpatty to assess space requirements for a proposed technical building linked to the Orange Gate-Marine Drive twin tunnel project, a key infrastructure initiative aimed at improving connectivity between Mumbai`s eastern and southern regions.

During the inspection, Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Dr Ashwini Joshi directed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to examine the feasibility of constructing the technical building at the existing basketball court near the Mafatlal Swimming Pool and submit a proposal to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The visit was attended by Mumbai City Collector Aanchal Goyal, high-power committee member Indrayani Malkani, Assistant Commissioner Santosh Salunke, officials from the fisheries department, and MMRDA representatives.

The Orange Gate-Marine Drive twin tunnel is an MMRDA project that will provide a direct underground link between the Eastern Freeway, Atal Setu, Marine Drive, and the Mumbai Coastal Road. The proposed corridor is around 9.2 km to 10 km long, with nearly 7 km running underground.

The project involves the construction of two separate tunnels equipped with multi-lane carriageways, emergency facilities and advanced safety systems. Once operational, travel time between Orange Gate and Marine Drive is expected to reduce from the current 22-40 minutes to around five minutes.

Officials said the project is expected to ease traffic congestion in south Mumbai, improve east-west connectivity and reduce travel time and fuel consumption.

Authorities consider shifting proposed technical building away from Chowpatty

The proposed technical building is currently planned at ‘Chhoti Chowpatty’ near Chowpatty. However, as any construction activity at Chowpatty requires prior approval from the high-power committee, alternative locations are being explored.

A meeting of the committee was held at the BMC headquarters on Monday, during which members suggested examining whether the facility could be shifted away from the Chowpatty area. Following those directions, officials from the committee, BMC, and MMRDA jointly inspected alternative sites on Tuesday.

Based on the committee`s recommendations, MMRDA has been asked to verify the feasibility of constructing the facility at the basketball court near Mafatlal Swimming Pool. The proposal will subsequently be submitted to the BMC and later to the Mumbai City Collector`s office for further approvals.
