Maharashtra Chief Minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis on Monday defended the use of bulldozers against illegal constructions, stating that the state government follows due legal procedure and will continue strict action against those violating the law, news agency PTI reported.
Speaking at an event organised by a news channel in Mumbai, his remarks came amid an ongoing political debate over so-called “bulldozer justice” used against illegal structures, often linked to individuals accused of criminal activities.
“I do not speak for any other state. Maharashtra is governed by the rule of law and action is taken only after following prescribed procedures. In Maharashtra, if somebody acts beyond the law or does something wrong, bulldozer action is taken against them,” Fadnavis said.
He further asserted that no individual or community is being targeted in such actions, adding that proper notices are issued before any demolition is carried out.
“Whoever does wrong will face action, and the bulldozer will continue to operate,” CM Fadnavis warned.
He also reiterated that strict action against lawbreakers would continue across the state.
Fadnavis confident on women’s reservation rollout by 2029, seeks wider political support
Speaking about women’s reservation, the Maharashtra CM expressed confidence, stating that the quota in legislatures would be implemented by 2029 and that political participation of women cannot increase significantly without reservation.
Referring to the Women’s Reservation Bill, also known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, introduced by the Narendra Modi government, he said the move was aimed at enhancing women’s representation in politics.
“Just as reservation has helped increase participation in education and employment, it is necessary in politics as well,” stated Fadnavis.
He further claimed that Opposition parties had not supported the legislation earlier despite the Centre providing a “practical solution” for its implementation.
“The Opposition did not want the bill to be passed. However, political parties are now realising women cannot be ignored. Many parties are preparing to support the bill. The legislation will secure wider support in the coming years,” he said.
Fadnavis added that the bill would be implemented by 2029 and expressed hope that opposition parties in Maharashtra would also support the initiative.
